Meet and Sponsor Our Cows

ANNABELLE

Sponsor Annabelle! We first met Annabelle while investigating a local cruelty/starvation case, we found her locked in a tiny stall up to her knees in her own waste, on top of a floor that was rotting away underneath of her. On top of the horrific conditions, Annabelle’s captor admitted she had stopped regularly feeding her a month before. We knew we couldn’t leave Annabelle to die alone in that dark stall.

APPLE

Sponsor Apple! Apple came to PRS in the summer of 2018 as a newborn calf, along with her mother, Aubrey, and the rest of their herd from a starvation case where conditions were so bad at a local dairy farm that state officials seized all the surviving animals. Apple has a spunky and hilarious personality but she is also a natural caregiver and took on the role of babysitter for other calves from her rescue.

AUBREY

Sponsor Aubrey! Aubrey was rescued in the summer of 2018 from a state starvation case and was seized along with her newborn baby, Apple, and the rest of their herd from a small, local dairy farm. Aubrey arrived severely dehydrated and emaciated. Before her rescue, she suffered frostbite, losing parts of her ears. She is a wonderful, devoted mother to her beloved baby, Apple.

BRENDAN

Sponsor Brendan! Like all male calves born on dairy farms, Brendan was an unwanted byproduct who was born just to keep his mother’s milk flowing. He was slated to be killed for veal before a kind person intervened and begged for Brendan to be spared along with another newborn, Sean. Both boys were so sick upon rescue they needed emergency, lifesaving care and were hospitalized for two weeks at Tufts.

CARTER

Sponsor Carter! Carter came to PRS in the summer of 2018 as a newborn calf, along with his mother, Chloe, and the rest of their herd from a starvation case where conditions were so bad at a local dairy farm that state officials seized all the surviving animals. Carter is best friends with another young calf, James, who was part of the same rescue and the two of them quickly became inseparable.

CHLOE

Sponsor Chloe! Chloe was rescued in the summer of 2018 from a state starvation case and was seized along with her newborn baby, Carter, and the rest of their herd from a small, local dairy farm. Chloe arrived severely dehydrated and emaciated. Had she not been rescued, Carter would have been taken from her as a young calf to be killed for veal but instead, this mother-son pair will spend the rest of their lives together.

CLEMENTINE

Sponsor Clementine! Clementine came is as part of our big dairy herd rescue from a state cruelty/starvation case in the summer of 2018. Shortly before her rescue, she gave birth to a calf who didn’t survive the horrific condition on the farm. The matriarch of our main herd, Clementine is brave and seemingly fearless. She will do anything to protect her herd and has earned everyone’s respect.

CORA

Sponsor Cora! Cora came is as part of our big dairy herd rescue from a state cruelty/starvation case in the summer of 2018. She is one of the more shy cows in our main herd and is best friends with Daisy and Jasmine, two of her fellow rescues. Although she is shy, over time she opened up to her caregivers and is often one of the first to come and say hello these days.

DANICA "DANI"

Sponsor Dani! Dani was born at Peace Ridge in the summer of 2018 after her mother, Dotty, arrived pregnant from a state cruelty/starvation case. Born here at a vegan sanctuary, Dani will never know the horrors that her mother endured before she was rescued. We have loved watching this beautiful little calf grow up in a place where she will always be with her beloved mother.

DOTTY

Sponsor Dotty! Dotty was rescued in the summer of 2018 from a state starvation case and was seized along with the rest of her herd from a small, local dairy farm. Dotty arrived severely dehydrated and emaciated when she arrived and also six months pregnant. Two months after she arrived, she gave birth to a perfect little calf, Dani, who she adores. This mother-daughter pair will spend the rest of their lives together.

FOREST

Sponsor Forest! Forest was born at Peace Ridge in the summer of 2018 after his mother, Peaches, arrived pregnant from a state cruelty/starvation case. Born here at a vegan sanctuary, Forest will never know the horrors that his mother endured before she was rescued. We have loved watching this beautiful little calf grow up in a place where he will always be with his beloved mother.

GEORGIE

Sponsor Georgie! Georgie came to PRS in the winter of 2021 as a sick, unwanted calf from a local dairy farm. Taken from his mother shortly after birth, he wasn’t able to drink the colostrum he needed from his mother and needed an emergency plasma transfusion up rescue. Not given any basic care, including dipping his umbilicus, he had a dangerous infection that would have killed him. He was hospitalized for nearly two months.

GINGER

Sponsor Ginger! Ginger was rescued in the summer of 2018 from a state starvation case and was seized along with her newborn baby, James, and the rest of their herd from a small, local dairy farm. Ginger arrived severely dehydrated and emaciated. Had she not been rescued, James would have been taken from her as a young calf to be killed for veal but instead, this mother-son pair will spend the rest of their lives together.

HARRIET

Sponsor Harriet! Harriet was rescued in the summer of 2018 from a state starvation case and was seized along with her newborn baby, Hazel, and the rest of their herd from a small, local dairy farm. When they arrived, her calf Hazel was in critical condition with a life-threatening septic joint infection. Harriet was also in rough shape with a severe mastitis infection requiring an emergency udder amputation. Today both are thriving.

HAZEL

Sponsor Hazel! Hazel came to PRS in the summer of 2018 as a newborn calf, along with her mother, Harriet, and the rest of their herd from a starvation case. Even though she was less than two weeks old, Hazel was in critical infection with a septic joint infection so bad her front hoof was practically rotting off. She was hospitalized for three months along with her mother, Harriet, until she was healthy enough to come home.

JAMES

Sponsor James! James came to PRS in the summer of 2018 as a newborn calf, along with his mother, Ginger, and the rest of their herd from a starvation case where conditions were so bad at a local dairy farm that state officials seized all the surviving animals. James is best friends with another young calf, Carter, who was part of the same rescue and the two of them quickly became inseparable.

JASMINE

Sponsor Jasmine! Jasmine came is as part of our big dairy herd rescue from a state cruelty/starvation case in the summer of 2018. She is one of the more shy cows in our main herd and is best friends with Daisy and Cora, two of her fellow rescues. Although she is shy, over time she opened up to her caregivers and often greets us with her beautiful, smiling face, asking for a neck scratch.

MOBY

Sponsor Moby! Moby came in as part of the same big dairy herd state cruelty case rescue we did in 2018. Kept at the farm for breeding, Moby is the father of all the calves from that rescue – Apple, Carter, Dani, Forest, Hazel, and James. A rambunctious bull at the time he was rescued, Moby has mellowed into a wonderful, gentle steer. He is very loving and protective father who loves to play with his children.

NATHAN

Sponsor Nathan! When a local family moved houses, they left Nathan behind locked in a small shed without food and water. Weeks after they left, a neighbor heard he loud, lonely cries and went to investigate. When she found Nathan, she quickly called us. We got the state police and state Animal Welfare Program involved and within hours were bringing Nathan to safety at Peace Ridge.

PEACHES

Sponsor Peaches! Peaches was rescued in the summer of 2018 from a state starvation case and was seized along with the rest of her herd from a small, local dairy farm. Peaches arrived severely dehydrated and emaciated when she arrived and also seven months pregnant. Two months after she arrived, she gave birth to a perfect little calf, Forest, who she adores. This mother-son pair will spend the rest of their lives together.

PHOENIX

Sponsor Phoenix! Phoenix was rescued as newborn calf from a state cruelty case. He came to us with a life-threatening cryptosporidium infection that had killed the other calves on the farm he came from. Severely malnourished and dehydrated from the infection, he arrived on death’s doorstep and needed 24 hour a day emergency care, including hourly IV fluids. Today he is healthy and thriving.

SADIE

Sponsor Sadie! Little Sadie is our miracle calf. She suffered a severe, traumatic brain injury at birth in the summer of 2019 when she was born. Unable to properly nurse, she quickly developed a life-threatening pneumonia infection. Slated to be put down, we took her in and spent months hand feeding and tube feeding her until her brain injury healed enough for her to eat on her own. These days, Sadie is thriving.

SAMMY

Sponsor Sammy! Sammy was the second cow we rescued and now, years later he is our largest male here at Peace Ridge. When he was young, fellow steer Theo took him in and helped our caregivers raise our wild boy, Sammy, each day lovingly grooming him and leading him on long adventure walks through the fields. Though our rescued herd has grown dramatically, Sammy and Theo still have a special bond.

SEAN

Sponsor Sean! Like all male calves born on dairy farms, Sean was an unwanted byproduct who was born just to keep his mother’s milk flowing. He was slated to be killed for veal before a kind person intervened and begged for Brendan to be spared along with another newborn, Brendan. Both boys were so sick upon rescue they needed emergency, lifesaving care and were hospitalized for two weeks at Tufts.

SIMON

Sponsor Simon! Simon came to PRS in the winter of 2021 as a sick, unwanted calf from a local dairy farm. Taken from his mother shortly after birth, he wasn’t able to drink the colostrum he needed from his mother and needed an emergency plasma transfusion up rescue. Born with contracted tendons in both his front legs, Simon also needed months of splinting so he would be able to walk normally.

THEO

Sponsor Theo! Theo was the first rescued bovine to come home to Peace Ridge. Our magnificent, gentle giant has been with us since June of 2013 and is the patriarch of our main rescued herd. He was seized in a state cruelty case and came to us as a sickly, scrawny calf. Taken from his mother at birth, Theo has a special soft-spot for other motherless calves and loves to groom and care for our new, young rescues.
